Digital transformation is shaping future of construction industryThe industry’s focus is shifting from traditional methods to intelligent construction management solutions that can reduce the turnaround time of projects by using geospatial and other emerging technologies.
The Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry continues to grow and play a crucial role in a country’s development. The construction industry is highly competitive, with a clear focus on enhancing productivity and efficiency by minimizing time and cost overruns. The Introduction of geospatial technology in construction has led to safer and environment-friendly buildings, apart from smarter transportation networks.
Intelligent construction management
Among other things, the construction industry is looking at intelligent construction management solutions that can help in closely monitoring projects, so that the turnaround time can be reduced. This is possible with the use of geospatial and allied technologies. “Geospatial technology helps companies save on progress monitoring time by approximately 75%, manpower requirement by 50%, and overall cost of the project by approximately 20%. Construction firms over the past decade have begun to leverage digital technologies such as web-based Building Information Modeling (BIM), GIS, and scanning technologies like radar, drones, etc.,” said Dr. Shivangi Somvanshi, Director, Geospatial Knowledge Infrastructure.
Construction and sustainability go hand-in-hand
Modern-day construction lays a great deal of emphasis on sustainability. With the steady depletion of some of the raw materials required for construction, managers have started adopting the recycled way.
Dr Zaffar Sadiq Mohamed-Ghouse, Executive Director, Strategic Consulting and International Relations, Spatial Vision, says, “Most of the building targets, including high rise towers, are looking at used, recycled, and renewable sources in order to carry on with the construction. This is one of the topics that the engineers of Australia debated at the World Engineers Convention in 2019, which was based on the theme of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). The engineers wanted to discuss how we would use SDGs in construction and deal with the non-availability of raw materials. This is one side of the supply chain where geospatial information on logistics and supply chain can work for engineers.”
